Do You See What I See

Do You See What I See

As 2016 comes to a close, I reflect on the events that transpired this year. Most of them resulted in negative impacts as this nation moved farther away from the word of God. However in the midst of all of the chaos and unrest, Christmas brings things into perspective.

While listening to the radio, a familiar Christmas carol penetrated my thoughts. You probably know the song, “Do You Hear What I Hear.” The first verse simply says:

Said the night wind to the little lamb, do you see what I see
Way up in the sky, little lamb, do you see what I see
A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite, With a tail as big as a kite

I didn’t need to continue…the short five words begged me to really ponder about what we really see, in light of the turbulent times we live in. What do you see when you look in the manger? Do you see just a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes? Do you see hopelessness and despair because of the child’s circumstances? Do you see rejection by mankind in His future? Do you see nothing good coming out of this birth?

Or do you see what I see? I see love in a hateful and prejudice society. I see hope in hopeless situations. I see peace in our politically torn nation. I see warmth in harsh, cold places. I see healing in sickness of the body and mind. I see light in a dark world. I see goodness, kindness, and gentleness. I see forgiveness, grace, and mercy. Do you see what I see when you peer into the manger and gaze into Jesus’ eyes?

I see not just a baby, but a Redeemer. I see a Savior who went to the cross for my sin. I see a King who sits on the throne with the Father intervening on my behalf. I see life. The baby in the manger represents not just a new birth, but new life, new hope, new joy! So even in the midst of uncertainty and fear, don’t lose sight of what really lies in the manger.

I don’t know about you, but I will enjoy Christmas without fear of all the chaos around because I see Jesus as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He is still in control. With my new birth in Him, I can relax and sleep like a baby in spite of all the storms. Why? Simply…
