Spiritual Amnesia

I know who I am, I know who I am,
I know who I am, I am yours,
I am yours

The words quoted above to this beautiful song indicate that identity poses no problem to those who sing it. However, based on what’s happening in many lives today, especially in the Christian community, the question on the table remains for each person, “Do I really know who I am?” Sadly, many of us never grasp our true identity. Many suffer from “spiritual amnesia.”

Or perhaps, the real problem lies in the fact that many suffer from “selective amnesia.” I understand my identity, but because of what I desire to do or say at a particular moment or in a specific situation, I choose not to embrace it—instead, conforming to the world and the flesh. Either way, we forget we belong to Christ and cease from following God’s word. We follow the world’s standards and lose our true identity and effectiveness.

Some confuse their identity with what they do. When asked “Who are you?” many go into a long spill of work related information—their occupation, careers, ministries, etc. No wonder we fail to make a difference in the world today.

So do you really know who you are? 1 Peter 2:9 says, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priest hood, a Holy nation, a people for God’s own possession.” You stand as a child of the most High God and reign co-heir with Jesus Christ!

I could go on and on since scripture overflows with descriptions of our identity in Christ. He molded us into new creations. His life-changing work in us makes us different from the world. Therefore we should make a difference in the world.

Making a difference involves first and foremost claiming your identity in Christ. Know who you are based on God’s word. Then live like His child and stop conforming to the desires of the world and your flesh.

I don’t know about you but because “I know who I am,” I no longer suffer spiritual or selective amnesia. So I can confidently sing,

I know who I am, I know who I am,
I know who I am, I am yours,
I am yours

Why? Simply…

Because I Am CUTE
