After God’s Heart

Valentine’s Day… a day when many look for bouquets of flowers-roses, violets, orchids, and lilies. A day to indulge in delectable chocolates, chocolate covered strawberries, cookies, and little candy conversation hearts echoing sentiments such as “I love you, Be mine, You are Cute.” A day to receive jewelry, fancy dinners, teddy bears, Valentine’s gift boxes, and other tokens of affection or expressions of love from someone. A day when many simply desire the heart of a man or woman because they seek a love relationship.

But how many people pursue God’s heart? David did. In spite of his imperfections, the Bible declared him as “a man after God’s heart.” He sinned, but his sins led to his realization of what he really needed.

David realized he needed real love…love that transcends any human efforts. David wanted the love spoken of in God’s Word in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8.

“Love is patient, love is kind, and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails…”

David’s earlier pursuit of this love revealed that it was not found in a woman. His many accomplishments or status never produced it. His material possessions failed to deliver it. He realized since God is love, true love can only be found in God.

Therefore, David pursued love by pursuing the character of God. He remained a man after God’s heart simply because of his responsive and faithful attitude toward God. He found the true love relationship he sought. A love that brings joy, peace, and contentment… a love that never wanes or grows old… a love that lasts forever.

Though nice and appreciated, all the acts of love given on Valentine’s Day pale to the real love God offers every day. Man’s temporary gifts fall short of the eternal gifts offered through a love relationship with His Son, Jesus. No man or woman can give you the true love you seek.

So, if you are looking for love this Valentine’s Day, look no further than God’s Word. Pursue God’s heart. When you do, you will find that He provides all the love you need. And like David, you too will be known as a “man or woman after God’s heart.”

I don’t know about you, but as much as I love my husband, I desire to be known as a “woman after God’s heart.” As the song goes, “Can’t Nobody, do me like Jesus.” So, I will continue to pursue Him and His ways.

 Why? Simply …

Happy Valentine’s Day
