Foxy and Cu†e

Due to all the violence occurring in our world today, our small Bible study group decided to attend a defense class. Not just any defense class, but one for the ladies only. I learned of Foxy Defense through a dear friend. Her sister, Demetra Bradley, a licensed defense trainer and detective with the Ft. Worth PD teaches defense classes for young girls and ladies of all ages. So, I reached out to her and set up the registration process.

We set the date, time, and place. We arrived at the home of one of our small group members for our two-hour class on Sunday, July 23 from 1-3:00pm, allowing time for all to attend church services. All eight of us… pumped up and ready to defend!

Demetra shared her impressive credentials. We listened to a brief introduction about defense techniques and the characteristics of foxes. Foxes: quietly observe and move undetected… swift of action and thought… protector of their families… always watching and paying attention… playful spirit… rely on instinct… and possess great agility. These characteristics led her to choosing the name Foxy Defense and Protection.

Then the practice began. We met Bob. Bob towered about 6 feet with a mean facial expression. Why? Bob represented our attacker. But Bob probably never faced eight CUTE women eager to learn defense techniques with the Lord by their side… poor Bob!

When it came to my turn to practice the first technique, I looked at Bob and the evil look on his face. I only thought of how he wanted to hurt me, steal from me, and take my joy away. He represented the enemy and I needed to let the enemy know that I refused to go down without a fight… without using the weapons Demetra taught us.

Well, Bob and I fought… all eight of us fought Bob with the weapons given us. Bob got peppered sprayed, palmed slapped, ear busted, hammer chopped and elbow neck-knocked (my terminology). We learned to fight with other techniques to thwart a “potential Bob” that intruded our physical space. The knowledge we gained from this experience proved truly valuable.

But what about our spiritual space?  What about our spiritual attackers? The actual physical fights we may encounter in our lives are rare. Most of our attacks will be spiritual. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

Think of all the times the enemy, Satan, comes to us with His evil glares. He only wants to hurt us, to steal from us, and take away the joy the Lord gave us. Just as there are weapons to fight physical warfare, we possess the weapons to fight spiritual ones. God gave us the armor. Ephesians 6:10-11 says, “Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.”

Paul went on to remind us of the armor to use.  “Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with TRUTH, and having put on the BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, and having shod your feet with the preparation of THE GOSPEL OF PEACE; in addition to all, taking up the SHIELD of FAITH with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming missiles of the evil one. And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the SWORD OF THE SPIRIT, which is the word of God” (Emphasis added).

Yet, we neglect to put on the armor and pick up what we need to fight with. We lack the Foxy mentality: quietly observing what Satan does… being quick to think on God’s Word and take action based on it to protect ourselves and our families… always watching and paying attention to his schemes… not allowing his ploys to ruin our joyful spirit… relying on our Godly instincts… and then moving quickly to do what God says do. If we did, Satan would be defeated a lot more. The Lord promised to Cover us, but we must do our part.

I don’t know about you, but after taking the course and learning how to use the weapons to fight the physical enemy, I feel more confident in defending myself from the evil Bobs in my life (I tried to practice with my husband, but after the ear busting technique, he refused to be Bob anymore…oh well…at least the technique worked). But I am reminded more of the weapons the Lord gave me to use daily to win the schemes of Satan, my greatest enemy. I will use my weapons in both areas to practice my skills and rest in the assurance that the Lord will empower me to fight my battles and protect me.

 Why? Simply …

Note:  I highly recommend this training for young girls and ladies of all ages. For those who would like to find out more about Foxy Defense and Protection, or book a class from Demetra, here is the information. It is well worth the time.
