I woke up this morning and in my prayer time, I asked the Holy Spirit to give me the topic for a Christmas blog. I got dressed for my exercise routine and cranked up the music. Several Christmas songs played, and I hummed along. Then, one my favorites came on… The Drummer Boy. You know the upbeat, familiar, and catchy carol. I decided to sing along.

Come they told me… Pa rum pum pum pum
A new born King to see… Pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring… Pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the king… Pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum… rum pum pum pum
So to honor Him… Pa rum pum pum pum

I am a poor boy too… Pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring… Pa rum pum pum pum

I paused right there as the Holy Spirit spoke to me. How many people feel they have no gift to bring to Jesus?

See, the Christmas season can be a very busy time filled with many activities. Parties, baking, tree trimmings, light decorations, and deciding what gifts to give to the people on your list. It can also be a very lonely and depressing time for some due to these same activities and personal circumstances.

This little drummer boy appeared poor financially. He thought he offered nothing of value fit for a king. But he knew he stood in the presence of the King. So in spite of his perceived shortcoming, he offered what he had… the gift to play music on his drum. I listened attentively to the rest of the song.

Mary nodded… Pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time… Pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him… Pa rum pum pum pum
I played my best for Him… Pa rum pum pum pum,
rum pum pum pum… rum pum pum pum

Then He smiled at me… Pa rum pum pum pum

Did you get that? He didn’t just play, he played his best for Him! He gave an excellent performance fit for the king. See, the size or amount of the gift didn’t matter. The drum itself was not the gift. The beating of the drum was not the gift. The real gift centered around the little drummer boy’s attitude. His willingness to give fully of himself and to give Jesus his best because he stood in the presence of the King.

He didn’t want to give Him anything just to say, “Well, at least I gave the King something. He knows I am poor.” He refused to use excuses. And when the little drummer boy played, Jesus smiled… He knew it came from a willing heart and it signified a gift well received.

The little drummer boy gave his best. Are you giving your best to Jesus, or are you making excuses? You may feel financially poor like the little boy. Or maybe you feel spiritually, emotionally, or relationally poor. Maybe you just don’t realize you stand in the presence of the King. You still have a gift to offer Him because He gave each one of us a gift to use for His glory. And when you give it with the right attitude, His smile will follow.

The one gift everyone can give regardless of your situation is your heart. Jesus desires first and foremost your heart, and that’s a gift fit for a King. Christmas represents one of the best times to present your life as a gift to Him. That’s what God did for you. He gave you the greatest gift you will ever receive through His Son Jesus Christ. He gave His best.

I don’t know about you but this Christmas and going forward, I want my attitude to reveal my willingness to give fully of myself and give Jesus my best. I realize I stand daily in the presence of the King. He already owns my heart, so I will give Him excellence fit for a king. Why? Simply...
